Meet Alexis Gossage: A New Face on the MFC Board

I recently had the privilege of interviewing our newest board member, Alexis Gossage. Alexis joined MFC as an owner in 2017 and was elected as a board member at the Annual Meeting in May 2023. Here are some highlights from our conversation:

Q. Why did you decide to become an MFC owner?

A. A former employee and owner of a Natural Foods Co-op in San Luis Obispo, CA, Alexis moved to the valley in 2017. Drawn to the similarities between the two areas, with their large agricultural presence and emphasis on supporting local farms and wineries, she quickly became an MFC owner. She especially values the monthly owner coupon, a perk she didn’t have at her previous co-op.

Q. What is important to you about belonging to a co-op?

A. Alexis appreciates that co-op owners have a say in how their store is run. She finds co-ops to be community-oriented, fostering a sense of connection with staff and fellow owners. She believes that co-op members share a common goal of strengthening the local economy and upholding local food networks and community values.

Q. What drew you to join the board?

A. Seeing a call for new board members in the monthly newsletter, Alexis felt a sense of duty and a desire to engage with her new community. With the potential co-op expansion project on the horizon, she wants to offer her experience and is eager to help navigate future changes.

Q. What is your previous board member experience?

A. Alexis served on the Board for her Central Coast California co-op for three years, and as Secretary for 2.5 years. Her co-op's demographics included a blend of young families, long-time community members, and transitional college students, and she enjoyed acting as a bridge between their varied interests to help guide the co-op's future.

Q. What do you do for a living?

A. Alexis works for the Jackson County Library Services, where she assists people in their quest for knowledge, access to ideas, and finding resources.

Q. How do you like to spend your spare time?

A. She enjoys home improvement projects, raising chickens and maintaining a veggie garden, along with puzzles, books, all types of art, and diving down research rabbit holes. Her four-year-old daughter keeps her busy with dance parties, reading, imaginative play, swimming, and adventures in the woods. Alexis also cherishes cultural events, and has experience with serving seniors with dementia and those with special needs through animal therapy.

Q. What brought you to the Rogue Valley?

A. Alexis and her husband were drawn to the Rogue Valley by its natural beauty, affordability, small-town vibe, proximity to family, and accessible airport. After multiple visits, they decided to make it their forever home, and Alexis couldn’t be happier with their choice.

With her diverse background and passion for community and sustainability, Alexis Gossage is a valuable addition to the MFC board, and we look forward to her contributions in shaping the cooperative’s future.
